Why Low-Frequency Control Is Important in Acoustic Design

Low-frequency sound is one of the most difficult acoustic problems to manage. Bass energy can build up in corners, create standing waves, and cause certain notes to sound too strong while others almost disappear.

For this reason, professional acoustic rooms often require dedicated low-frequency treatment.

The Challenge of Low Frequencies

Low-frequency waves are longer than high-frequency waves. They interact strongly with room dimensions and may create uneven sound distribution. This can result in bass ringing, poor balance, and long decay times.

Simply adding thin wall panels may not be enough to control these problems. Low-frequency treatment requires specially designed traps and absorbers.

Piano-Type Low-Frequency Trap

The FS P312 piano-type low-frequency trap measures 300 x 300 x 1200 mm. It is made from rubber wood, multilayer composite board, and MDF.

Its main functions include:

  • Improving low-frequency response
  • Reducing low-frequency ringing
  • Controlling the proportion of bass energy
  • Reducing low-frequency decay time

The vertical design makes it suitable for placement near corners or wall sections where low-frequency energy tends to accumulate.

Cylindrical and Corner Traps

The FS-C312 cylindrical low-frequency trap uses rubber wood, multilayer composite board, and MDF. Its cylindrical structure is designed to help improve low-frequency response and reduce bass ringing.

The FS-12F and FS-18F corner low-frequency traps use MDF construction. They are designed for corner installation, where low-frequency energy commonly gathers.

Corner treatment is an important part of room acoustics because two or more room boundaries meet in these areas. Correctly positioned low-frequency traps can help improve the overall balance of the room.

Combining Low-Frequency and Mid-High-Frequency Treatment

Low-frequency control should not be designed separately from the rest of the room. A room may require low-frequency traps together with broadband absorbers and diffusers.

For example:

  • Low-frequency traps can be positioned in corners.
  • Broadband absorbers can control excessive reverberation.
  • Diffusers can distribute mid- and high-frequency reflections.
  • Wave diffusers can help control first reflections and listening-area consistency.

The FS-DA612 diffuser and low-frequency absorber is made from rubber wood. It is designed to control mid- and high-frequency reflections while helping address low-frequency standing-wave problems. It also supports a more balanced and clear sound field.

Applications

Low-frequency acoustic treatment is suitable for:

  • Recording studios
  • Home theaters
  • Professional cinemas
  • Hi-Fi rooms
  • Audio testing rooms
  • Music production spaces

A successful acoustic design does not simply reduce all sound. It controls frequency response, reverberation, reflection, and energy distribution to create a more stable and accurate listening environment.
